Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in Modern to see who could take down the top prize.
I’m going to have to add this past Sunday to my Showdown bucket list, I played my good friend and Team Face to Face Games pro player Edgar Magalhaes in the finals — and of course, he beat me soundly.
In a unique twist to the normal Face to Face Games Toronto metagame, this past weekend there were a full seven copies of Amulet Titan in the room, including Edgar of course.
The deck is powerful, can kill you on the second turn of the game and has the kind of staying power you need to beat the fair decks of the format. With Blood Moon on the down swing, this is just one of Modern’s best decks.
I played Humans to a second place finish behind Edgar. I think the deck is really underrated right now and is a strong proactive choice for any Modern event. Omar Beldon played Modern’s newest flavour of the month Izzet Phoenix to a semis appearance and the always pleasant Evangelos Tsiligiannis also made the semis with Burn.
Ryan Sandrin finally got to compete with his Turbo Vizier deck that he’s loved since it first blessed Magic Online. This is a newer spin on the traditional Abzan Devoted Druid archetypes that can combo-out your opponent both consistently and at a high clip. I’d keep your eye on this one.
With his win on Sunday, Edgar cements his spot in the upcoming Ultimate Showdown, while the rest of our Top 8 have begun their march up the leader board to qualify. This upcoming weekend at Face to Face Games Toronto we’ll be hosting a Legacy Showdown. Make sure to pre-register and get those Brainstorms ready and come on out to battle!
