Open+ Recap: Modern in Montreal

Azorius Control has claimed yet another Open trophy.

This time, the Open Series stayed home for a Modern Open+ in Montreal, Quebec and Patrick Wu piloted the powerful control deck to take down the tournament.

Your Open champ, Patrick Wu.

With his victory on Saturday Patrick became our third consecutive Open winner piloting Azorius. In fact, since the printing of Teferi, Time Raveler and Narset, Parter of Veils no other deck has won a Open Series event. Those are some pretty impressive results if you ask me.

Patrick added a little spice to his deck as well. With the deck already being so heavy on Legendary permanents he saw that as an opportunity to add Urza’s Ruinous Blast to the sweeper suite. Wu defeated Jules Valiquette in the finals who was piloting a classic Modern archetype in Golgari Midrange.

Your Montreal Open+ Top 8.

The rest of the Top 8 featured Laurent Binette playing Storm, both Michael Di Piano and Logan Margaritas playing the Frenzy Affinity deck that made the Top 8 of the most recent Mythic Championship in London, Patrick Larouche playing Humans, Francis Regimbald on Tron and Samuel Tremblay who played a sweet Mono-Black Pox deck.

Much like our last two Opens in Fredericton and Calgary, what we had on Saturday was an extremely diverse Top 8 that culminated in yet another Azorius victory. Notably, this specific event featured multiple copies of Affinity in the Top 8. Of course, this is an old favourite that’s fallen off in recent years but maybe with what we saw in Montreal it’s time to bring back your Memnites.

The thing about these new planeswalkers in Azorius Control is that the deck is now so much better equipped to find all of its high-impact and matchup-dependent cards. In game one you’re going to be able to use your Narset to dig you to that key Path to Exile and after-board you’ll be able to find you Rest in Peace much faster.

In addition to all the fun in our main event we had players on-site all day in Montreal battling in side events and hanging out by the Face to Face Games booth. We fired two absolutely FREE Standard sides and gave away a free entry to the upcoming Magic Fest Montreal as well!

Before I leave you for the week we at Face to Face Games want to remind you about our upcoming 10k Mythic Championship Qualifier taking place on June 15 in Toronto. We’ll be hosting it at the Montecassino Hotel, and every registrant will get a free Arcbound Ravager promo with entry. Make sure to pre-register and we’ll see you there!

Congratulations again to our champion Patrick Wu from everyone at Face to Face Games! Additionally, we’d like to extend our thanks to both our Open Series sponsor — Ultimate Guard — who hooked up everyone in the Top 8 with some awesome swag and to our amazing judge staff! The next stop on the series is coming up this weekend on June 8 when we head to North Bay, Ontario for a Modern Open. Make sure to pre-register and we’ll see you there!
