Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in brand new Dominaria Limited at our release weekend Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier!
Dominaria is here and the verdict is out — this set is so much fun.
There’s so many different archetypes you can slot yourself into and every different kind of game play is available to you. Combine that with some sweet Legendary creatures and a healthy dose of nostalgia and you’ve got a cool format on your hands. What more can you ask for?
Peter Howe was able to venture into these fresh new Limited waters and take down the event.
If you look at our Top 8 decklists from the Draft below, it’s clear that white was the colour of choice in Draft. This doesn’t surprise me in general, because finding early plays can be tricky in this format and white is the colour that offers the most options early in the game.
After that we see our players playing a lot of the historic synergy cards. This was definitely something I saw walking around the tables (after I lost very quickly) during the Sealed swiss rounds at the start of the day. Cards like Rona, Disciple of Gix and Raf Capashen, Ship’s Mage look more like rares than uncommons and let me tell you that is a feature of this set.
Dominaria really allows you to both assemble subtle synergies and just play off of the individual power level of your cards. This is something I feel works into a healthy Sealed environment.
Aside from Peter, or Top 8 also featured some other new and not-so-new faces. Melissa Grenier further proved that she does not lose in Limited often and Jades Swadron put together a sweet Haphazard Bombardment Draft deck in the Top 8. Peter de Vries also showed us that he can win with more than just Modern Merfolk.
With his win on Sunday Peter cements his spot in the Face to Face Games Ultimate Showdown. Congratulations Peter! Next week we’re hosting a Modern Showdown, so get your Tarmogoyfs, Thalias and Hollow Ones ready. We also have our latest FaceToFaceGames.com Open Series event on Saturday at the Montecassino Hotel! This one’s going to be Team Trios in preparation for Grand Prix Toronto later in May. You don’t want to miss it, so pre-register now!
