Showdown Recap: Legacy

Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational.

This week players battled in Legacy and a local stalwart showed up and put in work like we’re used to — Omar Beldon.

Beldon is a noted Tundra lover, and was able to win on the back of his beloved white and blue cards on Sunday.

Beldon has been playing a lot of Azorius Stoneblade over the past few months in preparation for Grand Prix Niagara Falls. This time, he added a light splash of black to the deck for some added disruption in the form of Thoughtseize and some extra answers to creatures in Zealous Persecution.

Having these extra answers to creatures really paid off as our entire Top 8 was crawling with Stoneforge Mystic decks. Of the eight decks in the elimination rounds a full five of them were playing Stoneforge. Beldon’s opponent in the finals Indy Zhao was one of them, as one of two Death & Taxes players.

The format is certainly in a place where these fair white decks can have success. Delver is still a player, one of the more popular combo decks is Golgari Depths which you’re well setup against and True-Name Nemisis is still just as good as ever.

The none-white decks in the Top 8 were Travis Macdonald’s Sneak & Show deck with which he picked up his second straight Legacy Showdown Top 8 with, last week’s champ Felix Sloo’s awesome Dimir Control deck and Taylor Carnevale’s Izzet Delver deck.

With his win on Sunday, Omar cements his spot in the upcoming Ultimate Showdown, while the rest of our Top 8 have begun their march up the leader board to qualify.
