Showdown Recap: Legacy at Nats

Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week, players battled in the Legacy format at the International Centre during Canadian Nationals to take down the top prize.

Matthew Dilks shows off his Showdown playmat.

Well, all I can say about this Top 8 is that clearly Life from the Loam is a powerful card and that if you’re going to Eternal Weekend you better have a plan for beating Marit Lage. Matthew Dilks and has trusty Lands deck took down the event and he was one of four Dark Depths players in the Top 8. The last time I did a recap for a Legacy event, it was all about 4C Leovold, and clearly this is the natural metagame transition. All of these players have powerful linear gameplans that include a Loam engine that fair midrange decks have a very hard time interacting with. This coupled with the quick depths win and Wasteland effects make this shift make a lot of sense overall.

There was however one Leovold-style deck in Top 8 in Food Chain and a traditional Grixis Delver deck. There was also a straight-up Sultai Midrange deck that was sporting a Loam package of its own which is certainly of interest. Infect and Eldrazi rounded out the elimination round players as the two most linear all-in decks. There’s certainly been a shift in the Showdown Legacy metagame. Now it’s time to see if the fair mages can adjust.

With his win this weekend Matthew qualifies himself for the next Face to Face Games Ultimate Showdown and the rest of the Top 8 have started their march toward the top of the Showdown leaderboard. Join us this weekend at Face to Face Games Toronto for our Modern Showdown because the only thin more fun than casting Brainstorm is casting 10/10 Death’s Shadows!
