Showdown Recap: M20 Team Sealed

Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in one of Magic’s most fun formats — Team Sealed — to celebrate M20 Release Weekend!

The illustrious Team Not-So-Young-Anymore Child — Lucas Worrell, Liam Kane and Jacob Richer — proved to powerful for the competition on Sunday, as they were able to triumph over the field and take down the top prize.

Your Showdown champs.

These three players have been a major part of the competitive community at the shop almost since we first opened, and we’ve watched as they’ve grown up and dominated events along the way. This time in Team Sealed, one of the most skill intensive formats Magic has to offer.

They were able to edge out another team of Face to Face Games Toronto veterans in Jeff Swaluk, Nathan Starke and Ryan Sandrin in the finals.

Your M20 Team Sealed Top 4.

Joining these two squads in the Top 4 were the teams of Eilerson, Gauder and Duong and Nikolic, Tran and Singh.

The early reviews on M20 Limited are glowing as far as core sets are concerned. The set feels a little more pushed than any of its kind we’ve seen in recent years. You still get that simplistic core set feel where creatures and combat matter, but the small power creep of cards like Murder being downgraded to common has made more controlling decks a lot easier to draft. From what I’ve seen Azorius Fliers like the deck that Liam Kane played in the Top 4 look to be at the top of the format, so when you’re drafting or playing Sealed you’ll want to make sure you can combat the skies.

With his win on Sunday, Lucas, Liam and Jacob cement their spots in the upcoming Ultimate Showdown, while the rest of our Top 4 have begun their march up the leaderboard to qualify.
