Showdown Recap: Modern

Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in Modern to see who could take down the top prize.

This week, Ryan Sandrin achieved his dream. He won a tournament with his pet deck — Turbo Devoted Druid Combo.

Your Modern Showdown champion, Ryan Sandrin.

Sandrin has been piloting this deck to some pretty strong results locally and it has two Grand Prix Top 8s to its name over the past year. Maybe it’s time we start paying closer attention to this blistering fast archetype.

Sandrin defeated Dredge in the finals to claim his prize, a matchup which seems extremely in his favour. The fact is, this deck goes fast, and in Modern that’s the key.

The rest of the Top 8 feature Daniel Fournier and Taimur Rashid on Izzet Phoenix, Jeff Swaluk on KCI, Matt Loog on  Golgari Midrange as usual, Showdown super star Delan Hamasoor on Tron and Keegan Ferreira with his spicy Saheeli Combo deck.

Your Modern Showdown Top 8.

Izzet Phoenix is assuredly the new hotness in Modern. It’s been quite a long time since we’ve had a truly busted Steam Vents in Modern but this might just be that. Toronto local Tariq Patel took the deck all the way to the finals of SCG Worcester this past weekend and both Rashid and Fournier were able to make the Top 8 on Sunday with it.

With his win on Sunday, Ryan cements his spot in the upcoming Ultimate Showdown, while the rest of our Top 8 have begun their march up the leader board to qualify. This upcoming weekend at Face to Face Games Toronto we’ll be hosting a Sealed Showdown to celebrate Ravnica Allegiance pre-release weekend. There will be events at the shop all weekend starting at midnight on Friday all leading up to the Showdown. Come on out and celebrate!
