Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in Modern to get prepped for Grand Prix Toronto on Feb. 10-11.

This past weekend was certainly a big moment for the Modern format. We saw Lantern Control win a Pro Tour and 5C Humans make a big splash at the same event in Bilbao, Spain. Back here in Toronto, 5C Humans also won our Sunday Modern Showdown in the hands of local player Jeff Swaluk.

Modern Showdown champion Jeff Swaluk

If I could be so bold, I think if there’s anything we’ve learned this weekend it’s that you can play anything you want in Modern and have success with it. Additionally, we learned aggro is still the king. In the words of Swaluk himself, “I played like a donkey all day and the deck carried me.”

Chris Flink had a good day in his favourite format piloting his trusty Ad Nauseum deck even as the format gets more hostile toward it by the day.

We saw more blue-based control decks have some success in the hands of Beldon and Sturm showing that maybe last weekend’s Open results weren’t a fluke.

It’s going to be interesting seeing how the metagame adapts to the Pro Tour results this coming weekend at Grand Prix Toronto. My money’s on a big weekend for Traverse Shadow (as it always is).

Your Modern Showdown Top 8.

With his win on Sunday Swaluk moves himself up Face to Face Games Ultimate Showdown leaderboard. Next week we’re taking the week off from the Sunday Showdown series to sell you all the cards you need at the Grand Prix. With that said, be sure not to miss the following weekend where players will be battling some Legacy !
