Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in Modern Horizons Sealed to celebrate Pre-Release Weekend!
With the Ultimate Showdown on the Horizon, we had a packed house this past Sunday to celebrate Modern Horizons pre-release. The format was challenging and interesting and the games were long and interactive. And when the dust settled, Yann Giffaux was left standing with an invite to next weekend’s Ultimate Showdown.
Yann drafted a sweet Abzan deck in the Top 8 featuring Force of Despair that was able to carry him to his victory. He defeated Limited-expert and Showdown regular Melissa Grenier in the Top 8 who had a nice aggressive Gruul deck.
After a weekend of matches I’m of the opinion that this format is nicely balanced. It doesn’t grind too hard like many Masters formats of the past, has some solid two-drops and each colour-pair has some strong built-out synergies. I truly had a blast playing on Sunday and each game seemed to offer a new and interesting interaction.
Joining Melissa and Yann in the Top 8 was Jesse Parrish who drafted a cool Rakdos deck, Andrew Gordon in his billionth Showdown Top 8, Eric Sturm who played an Azorius deck with multiple copies of Fact or Fiction, Alejandro Manna playing Sultai, Pedram Moazen-sayad who drafted and aggressive Boros deck and lastly local celebrity Daniel “DannyDigital” Fournier.
Before I leave you for the week, we at Face to Face Toronto want to remind you about our upcoming 10k Mythic Championship Qualifier taking place on June 15.
