Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week, players battled in the Modern format for the top prize — and a familiar face took it down.
That’s right Edgar “no-bad-matchups” Magalhaes had success at yet another showdown, this time with his favourite Amulet Titan deck. The Top 8 of this event was pretty unique for a Toronto Modern event. Aside from Edgar’s unique deck choice there were also a full two copies of Lantern Control in the elimination rounds. From my perspective this shows a lack of B/G archetypes and Abrupt Decay decks in the room, which is a big shift for the city. Maybe people are starting to wise-up to the notion that interaction isn’t where you want to be in Modern. The cycles in the metagame keep on coming, and Edgar’s linear strategy was the best on Monday.
The rest of the Top 8 was about what you’d expect from Modern, a Burn deck, a Storm deck a random control deck or two. Matthew Dilks, our recent Ultimate Showdown champion ran it back with Temur Moon and made yet another Top 8. Dilks is certainly fired up to defend that title.
With his win on Sunday Edgar moves himself up Face to Face Games Ultimate Showdown leaderboard. Next weekend we’ll be hosting a Legacy Showdown on Sunday in addition to our Magic Open House on Saturday. The week after is Rivals of Ixalan Pre-Release. Needless to say there’s a lot of Showdown points to be had over the next little while, so come on down to Face to Face Games Toronto and battle!
