Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in Guilds of Ravnica Sealed to celebrate release weekend!

This past Sunday we got our second consecutive taste of this awesome new Sealed format on the Showdown series. This week, Derek Lanshee was able to take down the top prize with his sweet Golgari deck in Top 8.

Interestingly enough, Golgari was the least favoured colour combination by the Magic Twitter hive mind coming into the weekend. The Guild certainly has some powerful cards, but the enablers really need to come your way in order to make it work.

So far, the Dimir surveil cards and the Boros aggressive cards have stolen the show. But, we’re only two weeks in and Lanshee showed us on Sunday that even Golgari can pick up some wins.

In second place we had Sungho Lee. Sungho is a Toronto staple and drafted a sweet Boros aggro deck in the Top 8 to make it all the way to finals. In my short experience with this format Boros is where you want to be if you’re the only R/W drafter. This deck is fast and can snowball quickly and on raw power alone might be the best archetype when it all comes together.

With his win on Sunday, Derek cements his spot in the upcoming Ultimate Showdown and the rest of our Top 8 have begun their march up the leader board to qualify. This upcoming Saturday Face to Face Games will be hosting a 5k Modern Open+ at the Montecassino Hotel in addition to a 1k Legacy Showdown on Sunday. Make sure to pre-register for this jam packed weekend of Magic!
