Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in Standard to see who could take home the top prize!

It’s happened again. Yes, we hosted a Standard Sunday Showdown and Lucas Worrell won the entire thing.

Seven of your Standard Showdown Top 8 competitors.

That said, this time Worrell ran off too quickly for us to get a photo of him after winning.

He played Mono-Red Aggro on Sunday afternoon, an archetype that he’s been winning with at Face to Face Games Toronto for the better part of the last three years. Runaway Steam-Kin and Goblin Chainwhirler are two of the most powerful early plays the format has to offer, and Lucas capitalized on that.

Worrell was able to defeat Paolo Bueno in the Finals who was playing one of Standard’s other top decks — the much slower but oh so powerful Esper Control.

Joining them in the Top 8 were a whole host of new faces and some familiar ones to boot: Graham Gibb on Gruul Aggro, Gokulan Balakrishnan played Izzet Drakes, Ryan Sandrin playing a bunch of green creatures like he does best, Ming Joanis playing Mono-White, Marlowe Lain who played a sweet Orzhov Midrange deck and Ellis Straker who played a Golgari beatdown deck.

This was of course our last Showdown in our current home. As of April 24 we will be moving into our new store at 1398 Danforth Ave. and the Showdown series will continue better than ever.

And to kick that off we’d like to introduce you to the official Showdown Series playmat coming with War of the Spark:

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to get out and battle for this baby!

Make sure to stop by the new shop for any of our weekly events during our first week open because as our gift to you in celebrating the move, they are all free! If you haven’t seen it yet, here is the new event schedule that takes hold once we move:

With his win on Sunday, Lucas cements his spot in the upcoming Ultimate Showdown, while the rest of our Top 8 have begun their march up the leader board to qualify. If you’re interested in your Ultimate Showdown point total, you can check it out here. If you’d like to inquire about your point total or report a discrepancy, please email Toronto@facetofacegames.com. This upcoming weekend at Face to Face Games Toronto we’ll be hosting a Sealed Pre-Release Showdown in honour of War of the Spark! It will be our first Showdown at our brand new location 1398 Danforth Ave. and you will not want to miss it!
