Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in Standard for the Rivals of Ixalan Store Champs!
While U/R God Pharaoh’s Gift was making its big splash in Standard at Grand Prix Seattle, old faithful took down our Standard champs event at Face to Face Games Toronto. Massimo Gordillo took it down with good old Grixis Energy.
Ryan Sandrin did make a splash with a GFG deck, but this one was a U/W version more like we were used to seeing before the banning of the Temur Energy cards.
The rest of the Top 8 was largely made up of red decks, as Hazoret proved unstoppable once again.
It’s official, Delan Hamasoor cannot miss a Top 8 and Gokulan Balakrishnan is not to far behind him.
It’s starting to feel like we’ve got a pretty strong core of Standard staples at the store, as the same five to ten people seem to show up in all of our Top 8s.
It will be interesting to see going forward if what we saw yesterday will be able to hold up in the future against this new U/R Gift menace we saw on the weekend. Standard is about to go through another huge shift and Dominaria is just on the horizon.
With his win on Sunday Massimo furthers his climb up the Face to Face Games Ultimate Showdown leader board. Next week we’re hosting a Legacy Sunday Showdown! Come out and jam some Deathrite Shamans before the upcoming banned and restricted announcement.
