Showdown Recap: Stoneforge finally breaks through in Modern

You knew it was only a matter of time before Stoneforge Mystic made an impact on the Toronto Modern scene in a big way.

For the last few weeks we’ve watched as its crept up in numbers across the board at Modern tournaments only to be thwarted by decks like Tron and Dredge. But, this weekend three unique Stoneforge variants made their way into the elimination rounds at our Modern Showdown.

With that said, the powerful two-drop was not able to break through and take the top spot. That honour belonged to Liam Tate and his Burn deck who capped off his second consecutive Modern Showdown Top 8 with a victory.

Tate defeated one of those Stoneforge decks in the finals where he bested Quinn Graham and his Azorius Stoneblade deck. This finish also secures Graham his second consecutive Modern Showdown Top 8 with his Stoneblade deck.

Joining them in the Top 8 were Chris Ha playing his trusty Jund deck, Tse Shuen Wan with what feels like his millionth Showdown Top 8 playing Blue Moon, Paolo Bueno on TitanShift, Michael Boimistruck playing Bant Spirits, David Booker on Grixis Death’s Shadow and Kelvin Wallace playing an awesome deck that’s cropped up since the B&R announcement in Bant Soulherder.

With his win on Sunday, Liam cements his spot in the upcoming Ultimate Showdown, while the rest of our Top 8 have begun their march up the leader board to qualify.
