Showdown Recap: Trios

0

As far as I’m concerned, if you’re a competitive Toronto Magic player, nothing quite tops a Trios Sunday Showdown. It’s a shot to claim some bragging rights over your friends and play Magic in the most fun way possible — as a team.

This past weekend, the team of Brian Ching, Jody Scott and Gengyu Xu claimed the top spot with a mix of Vampires in Standard, Jund in Modern and old school Dimir Reanimator in Legacy.

Your Team Trios Showdown champion.

Shocking I know, but for once the team of Swaluk, Tubello and Andrew Gordon scrubbed out of a Showdown and left some room for the rest of us to win some matches.

In a room full of grindy midrange decks in the Standard seat, Ching was able to do a good job of going underneath his opponents all day. Jund has put up some pretty good results in Modern as of late at the shop, and the fact is that it’s really never a bad time to put Griselbrand into play on turn one in Legacy.

Your Trios Showdown Top 4.

In Legacy we saw the classic battle of combo versus Delver face off all day long at the shop. Temur Delver has really risen to the peak of the metagame over the past couple weeks of action at both SCG Syracuse and GP Atlanta this past weekend, and the deck also performed well at our event.

In Modern we had a bit of everything — as always. A couple midrange decks, Urza and Burn. All that’s missing is a Tron deck for the full appetizer sampler.

Lastly, we had Standard which in a lot of ways is a format that has been passed by. Rotation is a merely a few days away after all. With that said our Top 4 does do a good job of showing off where the format eventually landed after M20. It’s Kethis, Esper and Vampires, these decks are powerful and consistent.

With their win on Sunday, Ching, Scott and Xu cement their spot in the upcoming Ultimate Showdown, while the rest of our Top 8 have begun their march up the leader board to qualify. If you’re interested in your Ultimate Showdown point total, you can check it out here. This upcoming weekend at Face to Face Games Toronto it’s pre-release time! We’ll have events celebrating the release of Throne of Eldraine all weekend starting at midnight on Friday and capping off with our pre-release Sealed Showdown on Sunday! Make sure to pre-register and we’ll see you at the shop!
