What I would change in the MAIN :
-1 Phyrexian Metamorph
-3 Corrupted Crossroads
+1 Dismember
+3 Shivan Reef

What I would change in the SIDEBOARD :
-2 Crucible of Worlds
-1 Dismember
-2 Thorn of Amethyst
+3 Blood Moon
+2 Trinisphere

Blood Moon may be a little crazy, but it’s the best way to turn off Abrupt Decay. Plus all of the eldrazi you can cast after a Blood Moon are better later. (Endless One, Mimic+Dreadnaught, Eldrazi Obligator and Simian Spirit Guides. Umezawa’s Jitte) Keep in mind that Mox Diamond and Simian Spirit Guides don’t cast either Thought-Knot Seer or Reality Smasher. My original build played Blood Moon to great results.

Thorn is good, but I like Trinisphere more. Trinisphere is harder to cast, but the reward is much higher. Trinisphere punishes the same decks as Thorn only to far greater effect.

Chalice plus Trinisphere can be a solid lock to establish by turn 2.

Things of note from the tournament.

Round One : 2-1 vs. Esper

Round Two : 2-1 vs. Legendary Miracles
It’s a good thing Krarkas does nothing against me and I’m currently not playing wasteland so all of the basics aren’t a problem either. Once again, Cavern of Souls is a heck of a Magic: the Gathering card.

Round Three : 2-1 vs. Elves.
I had an interesting decision in game one. In the dark I have 2 Corrupted Crossroads and a Mox Diamond, 2 Chalice of the Void, an Endless One, and a Jitte. This gives me a turn one Chalice of the Void into a Force of Will with a back up Chalice turn two but no other lands to play the explosive game this deck is made for.

I mulligan the hand.

Then I mulligan again.

I keep 5 cards with an Eldrazi Mimic and a Reality Smasher with mana for both. Turn one Mimic, go.
He plays turn one basic forest into Deathrite Shaman. Elves. I still think the mulligan was correct. I won that game, lost the second handily while He was on the play, and managed to win a fast game three with chalice into Thought-Knot Seer.

Round Four : 2-1 vs. UR Delver

This match-up is historically favored for me, not because of the numbers or how the cards lineup, but because Boston and I have a history of battling in the swiss of a legacy tournament before meeting in the top 8 again. The match is always the same. The results have been the same, me winning VERY narrow games.

This time Boston HAD the Price of Progress with me at 8 and three lands in play. I draw for the turn and it’s a Cavern of Souls. I look Boston right in the eyes and I can feel him in my mind saying “Play that land before combat. Do it!” I smile and attack for lethal while Boston resolves his Price before my combat damage to show me. He had it.

Round Five : ID

Top 8 vs. MUD

Trevor is a good friend of mine with a beautifully foiled MUD deck. Seriously, it is a work of art. Since I finished first after swiss I was on the play and won the game with an Eldrazi Obligator on his Wrumcoil Engine for lethal. Finally a creature deck to threaten.

in game two I cast turn a two Thought-Knot Seer after Trevor resolved a Metalworker showing me Platinum Angel, Blightsteel Colossus, Wurmcoil Engine, Kuldotha Forgemaster and enough mana sources to get to 12 after He untaps. I take the Blightsteel and die to the Platinum Angel.

Game three is a spicy one. I look at my 7 and snap keep with a poker face. My hand is Eye of Ugin, 2 Eldrazi Mimic, Phyrexian Dreadnaught, Reality Smasher, Cavern of Souls, and an Eldrazi Temple. The high nut.

Turn one I play Eye of Ugin, Mimic, Mimic, then pass the turn. Trevor Plays a turn one Metalworker.
I play turn two dreadnaught, triggering the mimics while sacrificing the dreadnaught to itself making it a one mana pump spell. I attack for a lethal 24 which induces a chump block. We both have a good laugh while Trevor draws a card before playing a Grim Monolith. I play my Temple and Reality Smasher for an attack for 15. GG.

Top 4 vs. Shardless BUG

I was concerned about this game. My opponent definitely has more experience in the format than I do, and He has Abrupt Decay. That card is terrifying against my build. Obligator, Endless One, Mimic, and Dreadnaught. Also, I have no Matter Reshapers for value against them.

This was by far the hardest game of the day. But through a few key decisions the grindy three game match was mine.

The Finals : vs UR Delver
Boston and I have a history so his concession in the finals locked up my bye for the July 23rd Modern Open $3k and I thank him for that.

So that is the highlights from my adventures at a Face to Face Games Tournament Open Series NOT broadcasting. It felt good to be in the trenches again. I look forward to slinging spells more in the future between Opens.
