For his third turn Dan plays out a [card]Shrine of Piercing Vision[/card] which Marcel allows. On his turn Marcel attacks with two Hawks and then lays down his third. At upkeep Dan opts to fetch with his Scalding Tarn leading Marcel to fetch in response finding his two lands first before Dan had a chance the act. On his turn, Marcel attacks in with a [card]Inkmoth Nexus[/card] and a [card]Squadron Hawk[/card].
At end of turn Dan tries for the [card]Deceiver Exarch[/card] which is met with a [card]Mana Leak[/card] in response to the trigger from Shrine, Dan cracks the Shrine at three but is unable to find an answer. During his turn he lays down a [card]Ponder[/card] electing to leave all three cards on top before playing [card]Halimar Depths[/card] to see what the next three car would yield. Marcel is able to top deck the [card]Dismember[/card] paying four life to kill the Outcast. He then continues with the beats from both the Nexus and the [card]Squadron Hawk[/card]. At end of turn, Dan kicks an [card]Into the Roil[/card] targeting Marcel’s Hawk then plays out another [card]Halimar Depths[/card] to find some answer to Marcel’s small yet potent threats. Marcel plays out the Hawk again for it to once again meet a kicked [card]Into the Roil[/card]. Dan has no plays during his main phase passing it back to Marcel who attacks with the Nexus and then plays out the Hawk for a fourth time. Dan for his turn [card]Ponder[/card]s leaving all three cards on top and plays out a [card]Dragonmaster Outcast[/card] which is met by a [card]Flashfreeze[/card] from Marcel, a [card]Negate[/card] from Dan and another [card]Flashfreeze[/card] before being binned. Dan [card]Preordain[/card]s putting both cards on the bottom to find an answer and with none to be found, the [card]Squadron Hawk[/card] gets to swing for the victory.
Dan Lanthier 1 – 1 Marcel Angelo Zafra
Dan elects to begin with both players keeping their starting seven.
Dan plays a second turn [card]Preordain[/card] keeping both on top before playing out a second land. Marcel on his turn elects to play a [card]Squadron Hawk[/card] and finds a second one before passing the turn. Dan follows up on his third turn with another [card]Preordain[/card] again leaving both cards on top. Marcel for his turn attacks with a Hawk and tries to land another but Dan has the [card]Mana Leak[/card] to answer it. Dan then uses a [card]Ponder[/card] during his turn leaving all three cards on top and goes for the Dragonmaster though Marcel pays two life for the [card]Mental Misstep[/card] which is met with a [card]Dispel[/card] from Dan. On his turn Marcel uses a [card]Phantasmal Image[/card] to copy the Hawk to find the other two and pays four life to [card]Dismember[/card] the Outcast. For his turn, Dan plays a land and passes allowing Marcel to swing with one Hawk and play another. Dan tries for the Exarch which is met with a [card]Mana Leak[/card] from Marcel, a [card]Dispel[/card] from Dan and finally paying two life for a [card]Mental Misstep[/card] binning the Exarch. Passing the turn back Marcel begins attacking with three Hawks before adding a fourth to the board to continue the onslaught which proves too much for Dan as he scoops his cards taking this match to game four and Marcel being one win away from third spot and the last player to make the National team.
Marcel Angelo Zafra 2 – 1 Dan Lanthier
With Marcel joking that Dan has a better chance if he starts first Dan instead elects to keep with both players staying at seven cards.
Dan starts things off with a [card]Preordain[/card] shipping one card to the bottom and one card to the top. Marcel for his second turn once again has the [card]Squadron Hawk[/card] finding one more Hawk. On the nex turn he attacks for one declining to play a spell and instead passing it back to Dan, who tries for a [card]Shrine of Piercing Vision[/card] which meets a [card]Mana Leak[/card]. Marcel continues the attacks for one however being stuck on three lands he casts an [card]Azure Mage[/card] leaving an [card]Island[/card] up before passing it back. Dan attempts the [card]Pyroclasm[/card] which is allowed to resolve before adding a land and passing.
Marcel finds a [card]Preordain[/card] which he uses to look at the top two cards seeming content with both he leaves them on top finding the land he requires. He plays a Hawk on his next turn having the other two join his hand and passing the turn back. Dan at end of turn kicks an [card]Into the Roil[/card] aimed at the Hawk which meets a [card]Mana Leak[/card] from Marcel. Dan then is able to land a [card]Dragonmaster Outcast[/card] with both players paying two life for their [card]Mental Misstep[/card] and then Marcel paying four life for a Dismember which is met by Dispel from Dan. Marcel for his turn attacks with a Hawk and lands an [card]Emeria Angel[/card] which produces a bird.
On his next turn Dan gets to create a Dragon token. Dan then [card]Preordain[/card]s shipping both cards to the bottom. Marcel pays four life as he once again has a [card]Dismember[/card] which Dan can answer once again with a [card]Dispel[/card]. Marcel uses his [card]Tectonic Edge[/card] aimed at Dan’s [card]Arid Mesa[/card] hoping he only plays three [card]Mountain[/card]s but it is not to be as Dan finds the fourth [card]Mountain[/card]. Dan then uses a [card]Gitaxian Probe[/card] on Marcel to reveal a Hawk and a [card]Flashfreeze[/card]. He is able to continue adding hand drawn Dragon tokens to his board without any trouble for now. Marcel on his turn is able to produce another Hawk which won’t be much more than Dragon fodder for now. Soon the [card]Squadron Hawk[/card]s become Dragon fodder and when Marcel draws his one answer in [card]Day of Judgment[/card], Dan has a [card]Mana Leak[/card] waiting for him.
Marcel Angelo Zafra 2 – 2 Dan Lanthier
Both players offer a handshake wishing the other best of luck in the process. Marcel chooses to play first and both players keep at seven.
Marcel is firs to hit the board with an [card]Azure Mage[/card] which on the next turn starts the attacks for two. He then repeats the sequence on the next turn declining to play and instead passing the turn. After Dan added a fourth land to his board he passes it back to Macrel who stuck on three lands passes the turn right back. On his fourth turn he manages to find a fourth land but only have one blue source available in colonnade as the other lands are [card]Plains[/card]. End of turn Dan tries for the Exarch which is met by a [card]Mana Leak[/card] from Dan prompting him to fetch for an [card]Island[/card] and cast [card]Negate[/card]. Dan does not have the second combo piece on untap instead adding a sixth land and a Dragonmaster. Marcel attempts the [card]Oblivion Ring[/card] to remove the outcast but to no avail as Dan has the [card]Negate[/card]. Marcel then pays four life for a [card]Dismember[/card] on the Outcast which is met by a [card]Dispel[/card]. Marcel has a [card]Day of Judgment[/card] but Dan is able to bounce Outcast in response.
For his turn, Dan [card]Ponder[/card]s leaving all three cards on top before casting the Outcast once again. On his turn Marcel goes for the main phase [card]Into the Roil[/card] without the kicker which resolves. During the end step Dan has an Exarch which swings for one as he does not have the combo. He then replays the Outcast for his turn. Marcel without an answer passes back the turn to Dan who gets a Dragon token. He then swings in with the Outcast and Exarch dropping Marcel to eleven. Looking for answers, Marcel [card]Preordain[/card]s which is met with a [card]Mental Misstep[/card] from Dan. Passing back the turn Dan adds another Dragon token. Marcel looks at his top deck very slowly finding a [card]Squadron Hawk[/card] which is allowed to resolve and Marcel finds all three adding a second to the field. But Dan has an Exarch to tap down the Hawk and leads Marcel to offer the concession.

Canadian Nationals quarter finals Marcel Zafra (Caw-Blade) vs. Jeremie Ross-Latour (Jund)
It was announced earlier that only the finals would be played as a best of five so this match would be a shorter affair. After a few pleasantries, wishes of good luck and a handshake both players were off to the races. Marcel won the die roll and elected to play first but had to mulligan his opener while Jeremie happily kept his seven. An [card]Island[/card] and [card]Preordain[/card], one card staying on top, started the game. The play was quickly repeated two more times ultimately pushing another three cards to the bottom of Marcel’s deck. Jeremie quietly kept to himself and ramped with a turn two [card]Sphere of the Suns[/card]. [card]Squadron Hawk[/card] finding all his friends was Marcel’s third turn play. Jeremie, looking to cut down his opponent’s access to mana, cast [card]Beast Within[/card] on an untapped [card]Island[/card] at the end of turn and followed up with an [card]Acidic Slime[/card] on [card]Glacial Fortress[/card]. [card]Phantasmal Image[/card] copied the Slime and hit Jeremie’s [card]Tectonic Edge[/card]. The beast token came crashing through the red zone but traded with the real [card]Acidic Slime[/card]. Continuing to ramp up, Jeremie casts a [card]Solemn Simulacrum[/card] and passed the turn. The air assault continued from Marcel who was now attacking with two [card]Squadron Hawk[/card]s making the life totals 20 – 14 in his favour.
However, Jeremie was not interested in taking more damage and cast [card]Pyroclasm[/card] wiping the board and drawing a card off Solemn. Another [card]Solemn Simulacrum[/card] came down as did an [card]Everflowing Chalice[/card] for three. A kicked [card]Into the Roil[/card] bounced the Chalice end of turn. After the Chalice got replayed, Jeremie tapped out for a [card]Batterskull[/card] with an eye to turn the damage race around. Not to be outdone, Marcel played a [card]Sun Titan[/card], returning his [card]Phantasmal Image[/card] which copied the Titan who then snagged a [card]Squadron Hawk[/card] from the graveyard. Looking to get aggressive, Jeremie [card]Dismember[/card]ed the Image, activated his [card]Raging Ravine[/card] and attacked with it, the Solemn and [card]Batterskull[/card]. [card]Sun Titan[/card] attacked back and returned [card]Phantasmal Image[/card] for a second time which in turn grabbed a [card]Tectonic Edge[/card] out of the graveyard. [card]Batterskull[/card] blocked the [card]Sun Titan[/card], bringing Jeremie up to 18 life and Marcel used the fresh [card]Tectonic Edge[/card] to destroy [card]Raging Ravine[/card]. Another Dismember end of turn tried to finish the real [card]Sun Titan[/card] but a [card]Spell Pierce[/card] from Marcel prevented anything from happening. For his turn, Jeremie equipped his [card]Solemn Simulacrum[/card] with the [card]Batterskull[/card] and passed the turn. [card]Oblivion Ring[/card] for Solemn and an attack from the two [card]Sun Titan[/card]s convinced Jeremie to concede.
Marcel 1 – Jeremie 0
Both players sideboarded. Jeremie switching a [card]Pyroclasm[/card], Solemn, [card]Batterskull[/card] and 2 [card]Dismember[/card]s for 3 [card]Beast Within[/card] and 2 [card]Go for the Throat[/card]. Marcel brought in 3 [card]Flashfreeze[/card], 2 [card]Revoke Existence[/card] and a [card]Deprive[/card] for [card]Timely Reinforcements[/card], [card]Gideon Jura[/card], [card]Into the Roil[/card], [card]Consecrated Sphinx[/card] and 2 [card]Dismember[/card]. Jeremie elected to play first and again wished his opponent good luck. Marcel looking up to the sky, crossed himself and slowly peeled his opening seven. Both players mulliganed but settled for their six card hands. [card]Sphere of the Suns[/card] got [card]Spell Pierce[/card]d on turn two and Marcel refilled his hand with [card]Squadron Hawk[/card]s the following turn. A [card]Sword of Feast and Famine[/card] hit play and looked to end the game quickly but Jeremie had a [card]Beast Within[/card] ready. Jeremie made another land drop and passed while Marcel began missing his and started discarding [card]Squadron Hawk[/card]s. Beast token and Hawk began attacking and soon a [card]Go for the Throat[/card] was countered with [card]Deprive[/card]. The life totals stood at 20 -10 for Marcel. Oh his turn, Jeremie announced [card]Grave Titan[/card] but winced when Marcel had the [card]Mana Leak[/card]. The next turn a [card]Primeval Titan[/card] was hesitantly offered up but it too was countered, this time with a [card]Flashfreeze[/card]. After another attack, Jeremie graciously offered the hand.
Marcel 2 – Jeremie 0

Before Noah’s draw, Mani uses his [card]Tectonic Edge[/card] on one of Noah’s Valakuts to slow his development and leave him one mana short of another Titan. On Mani’s turn he swings in with the team for Noah to attempt the [card]Nature’s Claim[/card] on the [card]Oblivion Ring[/card] only for Mani to have two [card]Mana Leak[/card]s waiting which Noah is unable to pay and resulting in eleven damage and moving to Game 2.

Noah on his turn swings into the red zone with the Oracle and Troll again leading Mani to trade the Hawk for the Troll block. On his turn Mani taps down five to land a [card]Gideon Jura[/card] which kills the Oracle off and slow Noah’s land development. Noah attacks Gideon with the Troll which is blocked with a Hawk before Noah lands an [card]Inferno Titan[/card] dealing three to Mani.
Mani’s answer is a [card]Day of Judgment[/card] which kills the Titan but Noah regenerates the Troll. He then lands a Hawk finding his last one and passing the turn. Noah casts a main phase [card]Summoning Trap[/card] on his turn finding a [card]Primeval Titan[/card] among the seven and searching up two [card]Mountain[/card]s from his deck targeting the Valakut triggers at the Hawk for three and then Mani for nine before attacking Mani for four with the Troll and passing back the turn. On his turn Mani [card]Preordain[/card]s looking for answers but after shipping both cards to the bottom and drawing for the turn, none are to be found and he scoops his cards as we head to game 3.
Mani Davoudi 1 – 1 Noah Long

Noah takes action first with a [card]Rampant Growth[/card] which Mani is quick to present a [card]Spell Pierce[/card] to. The next turn Noah tries the same play this time getting it through to find a [card]Mountain[/card]. On his turn Mani targets a [card]Tectonic Edge[/card] at Noah’s Valakut which resolves and causes Noah to find a second [card]Mountain[/card] with his [card]Terramorphic Expanse[/card]. On his turn Noah casts an Oracle which resolves and plays out a second land from the top, being [card]Verdant Catacombs[/card]. Mani for his turn declines to play a spell passing it back to Noah who cracks a Catacombs to find a [card]Forest[/card] and gets himself a better top deck which is [card]Primeval Titan[/card] though Noah already has two lands in play and the Titan in hand which he decides to play finding himself two Valakuts to go with his four Mountains. He then attacks for two with the Oracle. Mani cracks his [card]Scalding Tarn[/card] for an [card]Island[/card] and then draws for turn. He plays out a [card]Phantasmal Image[/card] copying the Titan and finding a [card]Tectonic Edge[/card] and [card]Celestial Colonnade[/card].
Before attacks Noah plays out a second [card]Primeval Titan[/card] which is allowed to resolve and Noah goes to find a Valakut and [card]Terramorphic Expanse[/card]. On his turn Mani attacks with the Titan finding two more [card]Tectonic Edge[/card]s while Noah allows the Titan to pass taking six in the process. Noah for his turn begins by fetching a Mountain with his [card]Terramorphic Expanse[/card]. Noah draws an [card]Evolving Wilds[/card] off the top of his deck to get a [card]Mountain[/card] to deal Mani six and then activating the [card]Raging Ravine[/card] deals the last damage to end the match and earn Noah a trip to San Francisco with hopefully more to come.
