RCQ Recap – September 6, 2026 (Modern in Montreal)

Welcome back to the RCQ Recap series! For our second set of entries we’re doing two things a little differently. For one, we’re covering both the Toronto and Montreal RCQs from this week, but in separate articles. For another, these RCQs aren’t RCQs at all… they’re LCQs!

September 6th saw 41 players competing at our Montreal store for one of four last-minute invites to the Round 1 Regional Championship in Ottawa. After six rounds of Swiss and a cut to top eight, Alexandre Leikam ended up victorious on Esper Goryo’s! We were fortunate enough to hear from Leikam in a short interview.

Q: Why did you play this deck today?
A: I was going to play Amulet Titan until midnight the day before when I swapped to this.
Q: What’s your favorite thing about it?
A: It can do the broken thing of turn 3 Goryo’s but also has a good fair game plan.
Q: What was the most difficult match you played today?
A: In Round 3, my Grixis Midrange opponent wasn’t playing the stock meta list, which forced me to play around way more cards than I thought I would have to. Plus they piloted the deck really well.
Q: Which game today was your favorite to play?
A: The finals against Hollow One, My opponent and I were just chatting the entire time, making jokes and having a great time.
Q: What event are you most looking forward to playing next?
A: Regional Championship Los Angeles, on October 10th and 11th.
