Neon Dynasty’s Top 5 Mono Colour Commanders! So Far

Spoiler season is upon us and we are already deep into the newest Magic: The Gathering set Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty! Day by painstaking day Wizards of The Coast continues to bless us poor EDH players with many new fun cards! So, let’s look at some commanders from the newest MTG set.

Light-Paws, Emperor’s Voice

Starting of this piece with a bang! This wise old fox is sure to be a very popular commander indeed. Once the king of mono white aura decks, Sram, Senior Edificer may very well be dethroned by this beast of a card. I really see Light-Paws as a mono white Zur, The Enchanter. I realize that the downside is that you can only find auras, but the upside is that it can be of any cmc you are able to cast. It may be a bit slower, but I think this will snowball out of control very quickly. I cannot wait to build this commander, as well as throw it in a pile of decks!

Colin’s Rating: 10 crisp clean white t’s out of 10!

Goro-Goro, Disciple of Ryusei

The old saying used to be, “Wizards never does anything for white and red”. That statement is only half true these days, as mono red has gotten SO MUCH love in the past two years of sets. This commander is pretty simple, but also pretty fun looking. I only want my mono red commanders to do one of two things, either burn that ass or smash that face! Haste enabling commander ain’t bad at all, and a bit of a mana sink can be great in some mono red decks (maybe I can finally have a reason to use one of my three Leyline Tyrants I cracked). You could of course be boring and make goblin tribal, but that is just too easy for me.

Colin’s Rating: A 3 degree burn out of 4

Junji, the Midnight Sky

One of my favourite things to look for when shopping around for a new commander is longevity. Will my commander survive the blue bounces (just the targeted sadly), brutal white and black wipes and burning red stuff?! As far as a mono black commanders goes, this is nowhere near the best we have ever seen BUT, let’s talk about his second option for a second:

Put target non-Dragon creature card from a graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. You lose 2 life (full disclosure I missed the part that says ‘from a graveyard’ so this card is now x10 better).

I don’t know about y’all but I do greatly enjoy black’s ability to play with other people’s best cards. This commander is quite skilled at achieving this, and because it’s mono black you can probably get away recurring it from the graveyard to avoid its higher mana cost upon recasting. There are so many cards that do brutal things with this commander, for example Sepulchral Primordial. With cards like this, you commander will never stay dead for long! YAY!

Colin’s Rating: 8 zombies with their heads intact out of 10

Kodama of the West Tree

North, South, East, West, Kodama’s Reach is now officially unavoidable. Auto-include in Simic decks most likely, just your average run of the mill mono green nonsense card. I do foresee this card being very very powerful in counter based decks. This commander is ramp on a stick if built right!

Colin’s Rating: 7 pile of leaves out of 9

Jin-Gitazias, Progress Tyrant

Here we go again, a new Praetor card… yay… Oh wow it is super oppressive, hurrah…Now that we are all having a boatload of fun let’s get super serious. The first ability is where the fun is to be had with this commander. Doubling up spells will make a ton expensive spells more playable, and that is awesome. My biggest issue with it, is its high mana cost and the fact that it is an immediate target for removal. Good thing that it has some pretty great protection built into that second ability, however that probably won’t be enough if you opponents team up (which they will). This is definitely better in the 99 in my opinion, however people are going to make some crazy decks with this, and I look forward to shedding many tears!

Colin’s Rating: 6.3 sad faces out of 8

That is all for now, there are a great deal of spoilers out and about. Check them out for yourself here! Until next time, this is Colin from Cardboard Command signing off.

Keep on Slangin!
