Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in Team Trios Constructed to see who could take down the top prize.
You know that whenever we host a Team Trios Showdown at Face to Face Games Toronto, its going to be a party. We has a packed house for a sold out event on Sunday, and some of the best groups of players the city has to offer showed up to do battle.
After the matches had finished, there were three players left standing — Daniel Goetschel, Tyler Nightingale and Omar Beldon.
Their team defeated the team of myself, Edgar Magalhaes and Matthew Dilks in the finals to take down the title. Our teams were nearly mirrored in our deck selection, with Tyler and I both playing Izzet Phoenix in the middle seat and Edgar and Daniel both piloting Esper. Dilks played his signature Golgari Depths deck against Omar’s innovative Azorius Stoneblade deck in the Legacy seat. And yes, you’re reading that right, Omar played his play-set of [Card]Delver of Secrets[/Card] in his sideboard.
The rest of the Top 4 included the squad of Ryan Sandrin, Daniel Fournier and Chris Ha and a team all the way from Barrie in Jesse Labrie, Dan Scott and Jason Critch.
Fournier and I played the exact same Izzet Phoenix 75 and Tyler’s list was not too far off. In my opinion, this is just the best deck in Modern and I think we did our best to prove that on Sunday. I’d also like to give a shout out to Sandrin, who kept Standard looking fresh with an extremely on brand Gruul beatdown deck.
With his win on Sunday, Goetschel, Nightingale and Beldon cement their spots in the upcoming Ultimate Showdown, while the rest of our Top 4 have begun their march up the leader board to qualify.
