Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in Legacy to see who could take down the top prize.
If there’s one thing I’m starting to learn while writing these recaps, it’s that when it comes to Legacy, the same players seem to be in the Top 8 of all of our Showdowns. This past Sunday was no different, where Showdown series staple Andrew Gordon picked up a win with Grixis Control.

Andrew has been crushing in Toronto as of late with Grixis in Legacy and obviously Sunday was no exception. Gordon played a similar list to what Platinum Pro Reid Duke played at Grand Prix Richmond earlier this year but added two copies of [Card]Blood Moon[/Card] to his sideboard to counteract some of the popular [Card]Dark Depths[/Card] strategies in Legacy.
And, if you look at this Top 8, that decision seemed to pay off.

Matthew Dilks Top 8’d yet another Legacy event riding high off his Top 8 at the Eternal Weekend Championship with Golgari Depths. Dilks’ partner in [Card]Dark Depths[/Card] crime Ryan Myers made it all the way to the finals with his version of the classic Lands archetype, notably featuring three copies of the card [Card]Choke[/Card] in his sideboard that Gordon was able to navigate through in the finals.
The remainder of our Top 8 featured Legacy Showdown regulars Richard Welch — who played an awesome U/W Standstill brew — Pox aficionado James Everson, Sam Shoffner on Elves, Jason Drossis on Grixis Control and Lisa Seelye playing Maverick.
A diverse Top 8 for one of Magic’s most diverse formats. Legacy is great right now and I can’t recommend it enough.
With his win on Sunday, Andrew cements his spot in the upcoming Ultimate Showdown and also puts himself in first place on our Showdown leaderboard, while the rest of our Top 8 have begun their march up the leader board to qualify. This upcoming weekend at Face to Face Games Toronto we’ll be hosting a Modern Sunday Showdown. Sleeve up your favourite deck, pre-register and come on out!
