Showdown Recap: Legacy

0

Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in Legacy to see who could take home the top prize!

Well I guess it’s safe to say that Zach Reiber is back in the Toronto Magic scene with a vengeance. Since his return just over a month ago, Reiber Top 8’d back to back War of the Spark Limited Showdowns and has followed that up with a victory this past Sunday in Legacy.

Your Showdown champ, Zach Reiber.

Reiber has been playing Stoneforge Mystic decks in the Toronto Legacy scene to success since he was a high school kid, and despite a brief a hiatus from Magic he showed on Sunday that he hasn’t forgotten how to suit his creatures up with equipment. Reiber played a fairly stock Azorius Stoneblade deck with some spicy new additions from War of the Spark in Teferi, Time Raveler and Narset, Parter of the Veils.

Reiber defeated long-time Pox aficionado James Everson in the finals. Everson has been playing Pox in Toronto as long as I’ve been around and he always seems to find himself in the elimination rounds of these events, even while piloting a bit of a rogue archetype. Legacy is truly the format of mastering your deck.

Your Legacy Showdown Top 8.

Joining them in the Top 8 was Anthony Evangelista playing Storm, Andrew Gordon playing a four-colour control deck, Berent Batur on Miracles, Marc Cernele who played lands and Ethan Meier playing his signature Golgari Depths deck.

Legacy is truly uncharted waters right now. With the printing of all of these new cheap planeswalkers nobody really knows what the best way to build around them is. Notably absent from this particular Top 8 was Karn, the Great Creator. A card that’s been putting up a lot of results on Magic Online in Legacy but didn’t quite creep into the Top 8 on Sunday. Personally, I can’t wait to see how Narset impacts this format and am looking forward to doing some brewing of my own.

Before I leave you for the week, we at Face to Face Toronto want to remind you about our upcoming 10k Mythic Championship Qualifier taking place on June 15.
