Noah Long drops by to let you know what he has been brewing for his teammates to test this week. Decklists galore from one of the top-rated players in Canada!
Sup everyone, I hope everyone has been enjoying the rest of this awesome summer! I'm back with some fun new ideas for Standard especially for you fans of Champs out there. Speaking of Champs, I unfortunately cannot defend my title in Ontario due to me sitting on my stupid rating for Worlds. Thanks PT San Diego!!!… On the other hand, I would love it if I could live vicariously through everyone who takes my new ideas out to play and performs well at their Champs. I will be showing you some of my top brews.
I know you all love juicy love story intros to articles but I'm old lazy tonight and just love getting to the good parts, the decks!
Mono Blue Control: A suggested Standard deck by Noah Long
2 Pilgrim's Eye
3 Wurmcoil Engine
3 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
3 Everflowing Chalice
4 Preordain
4 Ratchet Bomb
4 Mana Leak
3 Into the Roil
3 Stoic Rebuttal
1 Jace's Ingenuity
2 Volition Reins
3 All Is Dust
10 Island
4 Eldrazi Temple
4 Tectonic Edge
3 Halimar Depths
2 Scalding Tarn
1 Misty Rainforest
1 Mystifying Maze
SB:
4 Negate
3 Flashfreeze
1 Stoic Rebuttal
2 Jace Belren
2 Mind Control
1 Into the Roil
1 Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre
1 Eye of Ugin
I know, I know this list is very similar to Chapin's but I think this list will be able to handle the aggressive masses that is the usual Champs metagame much better. His list only ran 2 Ratchet Bomb which is, in my opinion, the best MUC card vs the new WW Affinity deck. For reference:
WW Affinity: A suggested Standard deck suggested by Noah Long
4 Memnite
4 Ornithopter
4 Steel Overseer
3 Lodestone Golem
4 Glint Hawk
4 Myrsmith
4 Leonin Arbiter
4 Quest for the Holy Relic
4 Tempered Steel
1 Argentum Armor
3 Mox Opal
14 Plains
4 Dread Statuary
3 Tectonic Edge
You will be seeing a lot of this deck!
Next…
Titan Force: A suggested Standard deck by Noah Long
3 Primeval Titan
3 Inferno Titan
4 Jace, the Mind Sculpter
1 Garruk Wildspeaker
3 Everflowing Chalice
2 Lighnting Bolt
4 Mana Leak
3 Rachet Bomb
2 Into the Roil
2 Explore
3 Cultivate
2 Volition Reins
3 Destructive Force
4 Raging Ravine
4 Misty Rainforest
2 Scalding Tarn
2 Khalni Garden
2 Halimar Depths
1 Rootbound Craig
4 Island
3 Forest
3 Mountain
SB:
4 Obstinate Baloth
4 Negate
4 Flashfreeze
3 Pyroclasm
This is my updated version of my Nats deck. Without Rampant Growth the deck needed to include a 3rd Cultivate and a Rootbound Crag to make the mana consistent. Ratchet Bomb is a huge addition to this list! I think it's one of the best cards for control decks today and most should be playing 3 Main Deck with the 4th in the SB if the deck isn't sideboarding Pyroclasm already. This deck is a lot of fun to play and I highly recommend it if you like playing big, expensive and powerful spells!
Next…
Big Red: A suggested Standard deck by Noah Long
4 Kargan Dragonlord
2 Pilgrim's Eye
1 Tuktuk the Explorer
1 Hoarding Dragon
3 Inferno Titan
3 Wurmcoil Engine
4 Koth of the Hammer
2 Chandra Nalaar
4 Everflowing Chalice
4 Lightning Bolt
2 Burst Lightning
4 Ratchet Bomb
2 Destructive Force
22 Mountain
2 Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle
SB:
4 Goblin Ruinblaster
4 Goblin Vandal
3 Pyroclasm
2 Brittle Elixir
2 Ricochet Trap
I think this deck will get much better as Mirrodin's world grows. With Koth, Red can now attempt to be Tier 1 for the first time in a long time. As long as Mirrodin produces 1-2 more amazing red cards, this deck could seriously be a top contender.
Lastly…
Mono Green Eldrazi: A suggested Standard deck by Noah Long
2 Overgrown Battlement
4 Primeval Titan
2 Wurmcoil Engine
1 Molten-Tail Masticore
1 Kozilek, Butcher of Truth
2 Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre
1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
1 Ancient Stirrings
4 Everflowing Chalice
4 Explore
3 Cultivate
4 Summoning Trap
2 Ratchet Bomb
3 All Is Dust
12 Forest
4 Khalni Garden
4 Eldrazi Temple
3 Tectonic Edge
1 Mystifying Maze
2 Eye of Ugin
SB:
4 Joraga Treespeaker
4 Obstinate Baloth
1 Pelakka Wurm
2 Terastodon
2 Molten-Tail Masticore
2 Ratchet Bomb
I think this deck got a huge upgrade in power level with rotation. It only really lost Rampant Growth and the deck is mono colored anyways. It gains Wurmcoil Engine, Molten-Tail Masticore and Ratchet Bomb which are all insane rares! Out of all the lists posted above, this is the one I would play at Champs. Its power level is high, it's lots of fun, and it finished 3rd at US Nats without all the new crazy upgrades! This deck is a Double Rainbow All the Way Across the Sky! (If you did not get that joke please go on YouTube and watch Double Rainbow now!
I guess that's that for now. Just letting you all know why I didn't say too much about each list is because the meta is still very up in the air and everything I'm saying is not coming from test results but from my experiences with card interactions and how similar situations from the past have played out. The detailed articles will come shortly after Champs when we know what the top decks and in the first meta of this SOM Standard era. Again, these lists are not tested lists so take what you like and have a lot of fun this weekend!
Yours truly,
Noah Long
