Steven Indzeoski Wins Modern Super Qualifier at F2F Tour Saskatoon

It had been a while since the F2F Tour stopped in Saskatchewan, but the wait was worth it. Thirty players came out to battle Modern at the Saskatoon Inn & Conference Centre, and when the dust settled it was longtime Amulet Titan specialist Steven Indzeoski who walked away with the trophy.

For Steven, this win was more than just another Top 8 finish. After an eight-year gap since his last big trophy, and with family and life pulling his time in new directions, hoisting the Super Qualifier trophy at home carried special weight.

Interview with Steven Indzeoski – Modern Super Qualifier Champion

Congrats on your Saskatoon win! You mentioned it’s been about eight years since your last big trophy. How did it feel to finally get another one, and to do it in front of your home community?

It felt really good. As I get older (and as my daughter gets older) I find myself having less time for Magic and questioning how much of my limited time I want to commit to it. Staying up to date on metagames is tough! Travelling to events is significantly more difficult for me than it used to be. I can’t spend hours every evening practicing tough matchups like I used to. It’s nice to know I still have it in me to win one of these.

Given all those challenges with less practice time, less travel, and balancing family life, how did you actually prepare for Saskatoon? Was there anything different about your approach compared to when you were grinding more actively?

I didn’t do anything too different. Definitely a lot less playtesting then I used to do though. The main thing I try to do is take a look at what the most popular decks are and check what commonly played sideboard cards I need to think about in those matchups. I’m just glad I didn’t run into any Ashiok, Dream Renders. That card has been on an uptick and is very hard for the Titan deck to deal with.

Amulet Titan is a deck that really rewards tight play and meta awareness. What made you stick with it here in Saskatoon, and how did it feel navigating through a field where cards like Ashiok are such a big concern?

Amulet has been my deck of choice for many years now, and I feel like since MH3 gave us Shifting Woodland it’s also one of the best decks in the format, so I have no reason to switch to anything else right now. Despite being on an uptick, Ashiok still isn’t super popular. I was mainly hoping to dodge it, which I did. I definitely got a little lucky with my pairings as I didn’t run into any Harbinger of the Seas either, which is more beatable than Ashiok but still very annoying.

Let’s talk about your run itself. Were there any key moments in the Top 8 where you felt the deck really showed its strength, or where those new tools like Shifting Woodland made the difference?

The finals were against Zoo which is generally a very favorable matchup for Amulet. The power of Shifting Woodlands and Aftermath Analyst really shone in the semifinals against George on Esper. He had double Solitude and the combo let me keep looping my Mirrorpool to keep going in response to each Solitude.

This was a huge win, and it sounds like the local community was really rooting for you. Any final thoughts or shout-outs you’d like to share as you reflect on taking home the trophy in Saskatoon?

Big shout-out to the Winnipeg guys and anyone else who travelled in for the event. I’d love to see the attendance numbers for our events get back to where they used to be and every little bit helps.
