From LGS to the Player’s Tour

What if I told you that you could qualify for Wizards’ new version of the Pro Tour by simply competing in Standard events at Face to Face Games events at our local Toronto and Montreal stores?

Well, you can.

In the plan they’ve laid out for the future of Magic organized play, Wizards of the Coast have created something called “WPN events” that can qualify players for what’s called the Player’s Tour. Which is for all intents and purposes the new regionalized version of what was once called the Pro Tour.

We at Face to Face Games have been awarded the privilege of handing out one of these special WPN invites at both our Toronto and Montreal locations, in addition to at our upcoming Open+ events. So, after some troubleshooting here is the exciting way you can earn the shot to compete at the PT in your own backyard:

Standard Prelim Showdowns

During the months of October and November, we’ll be hosting four preliminary Standard Showdowns at the Toronto and Montreal shops that will earn you a qualification for the WPNQ playoff. This playoff will also take place at the shop.

The Toronto preliminary events will be held on Nov. 2, 3, 9 and 17.

The Montreal preliminary events will be help on Oct. 19 and 27 and Nov. 3 and 9.

When the dust settles on these events, everyone who makes the Top 8 will secure a slot in the 32 person playoff. Anybody who finishes one of these events with a record of x-2 or better but DOES NOT make Top 8 will be awarded $25 store credit for their stellar finish.

Prizing for Top 8 will be added to the prize pool for the playoff.

WPNQ Standard Playoff

On Nov. 10 in Montreal and Nov. 24 in Toronto, the 32 players who earned Top 8 slots during our four preliminary events will battle it out in five rounds of swiss with a cut to Top 8 to see who will be headed to the Player’s Tour.

Here’s how prizing for the playoff with break down:

  • First Place: $500 Store Credit and an invite to the Player’s Tour
  • Second Place: $500 Store Credit
  • Third and Fourth Place: $250 Store Credit
  • Fifth through Eight Place: $125 Store Credit
  • Ninth through Sixteenth Place: $50 Store Credit

We are absolutely ecstatic to be able to bring you this kind of competitive programming at a local level. Local game stores are the heart and soul of the Magic community, and we think that being able to qualify for the highest level of this game in your own backyard is an incredible step forward for the competitive game.

That said, this isn’t just for the spikes. One of our favourite things about this initiative is that it simply helps us bring you all more Magic. So, if you’re just looking to play some Standard on a Saturday afternoon come on out. And if you’re looking to be the next great MPL star, we’ll see you there too.

We’re also hoping to bring you some special programming to pair with the WPNQ playoff as well. We’ll be packaging together player profiles and even looking into some video coverage for the event.

Player’s Tour Qualifiers at our Open+ Events

Now, these local events won’t be the only way for you to qualify for the Player’s Tour at Face to Face Games events. As we announced in September our Open+ events have now been upgraded to double as WPN events. This means that Open+ winners will receive a PT invite just like these event series we’re running at the local level. Here’s our upcoming Open+ schedule:
