In the Spotlight: Tour Weekend Toronto

Something historic happened in Toronto on February 6th-8th. If you couldn’t make it this time, you’re going to want shuffle up your schedule and be at the next one.

That’s right, the F2F Tour’s first ever Magic Spotlight Series event didn’t just meet expectations. It shattered records!

Here’s a rundown of the accolades we claimed for Canada:

  • Largest Spotlight Series ever held in North America
  • Largest Canadian gathering of MTG players ever
  • Largest Canadian CEDH event ever
  • Largest Canadian Legacy event in over a decade
  • Largest Canadian Pauper event ever
  • Largest LTQ in history
  • Largest Canadian Mini Master ever
  • Largest Canadian MTG artist group ever assembled

All in one weekend. All in Toronto.

From the main stage to the side event halls, every corner of the venue was buzzing. Whether you came to compete at the highest level, grind Legacy for the first time in over a decade, spend the weekend at the Commander tables, or just be part of something bigger than yourself, this weekend had it all.

The Main Event

The Magic Spotlight drew competitors from across Canada and beyond, all vying for a share of the $50,000 prize pool and a coveted invite to Pro Tour Secrets of Strixhaven.

We had live coverage of the entire event streaming throughout the weekend. Catch up on every round of Day 1 Swiss here:

After two grueling days of Swiss, eight players punched their tickets to the Top 8, and all of them left Toronto as Pro Tour-qualified competitors. The Lorwyn Eclipsed format produced some genuinely memorable moments along the way, with Virulent Emissary quietly doing more heavy lifting across feature match tables than perhaps any other card all weekend.

The weekend even produced an unlikely fan favourite in Chitinous Graspling, a common that commentators Mani Davoudi and Dom Harvey dubbed “the greatest Merfolk to ever walk Lorwyn.”

The Champion

If there’s one story that defined this weekend, it’s Valerie Jade.

Just one week earlier, Valerie had made her Pro Tour debut at Pro Tour Richmond, falling one match short of requalifying. Most players would take a week to recover. Valerie came straight to Toronto. The result was potentially the fastest bounce-back in Magic history: losing her Pro Tour invite on one Sunday and earning a new one exactly seven days later.

She piloted a dominant Golgari Elves deck that made removal spells look foolish. In her semifinal against Charles Wong, she landed a turn 2 Morcant’s Eyes, which Dom Harvey called “the single scariest card realistically in the format” for a removal-heavy deck to face.

While Valerie never even needed to activate the sacrifice ability to flood the board with tokens, the constant surveil triggers kept her hand sculpted while Charles struggled to keep pace. She dispatched him in a blisteringly fast 2-0 before facing down Remi Goupil, the tournament’s undefeated first seed, in the finals. Remi had navigated the entire weekend on a Naya midrange deck built around raw power and removal. Valerie’s Golgari Elves had other plans. She claimed the trophy, the $10,000 first-place prize, and her Pro Tour invite back.

Side Events

The main event was just one part of the story. Across the entire weekend, players competed in a stacked slate of side events covering nearly every format in the game, and the trophy photos in front of our “Welcome to the Spotlight” banner tell the tale.

A special shoutout to Jesse Speers, who won the Canadian CEDH Championship and took home not just a trophy but a stunning piece of custom artwork to go with it.

Prize Wall

Beyond the side events, the prize wall was one of the most talked-about features of the weekend. Players earned tickets throughout the event and redeemed them for an impressive selection of exclusive items that you couldn’t find anywhere else.

More Than a Tournament

A Magic Spotlight isn’t just about the main event. The vendor hall was packed all weekend with some of the best stores and partners in the game, with singles, sealed product, and supplies available from every direction.

Our buy station was open all weekend long, giving players the chance to turn cards they no longer needed into cash or store credit on the spot.

A huge thank you to everyone who set up and supported the weekend:

Vendors: Face to Face Games, Magic Stronghold, Fusion Gaming, House of Cards, The Mythic Store, Chimera Gaming, Ultimate Guard

Community Retailers: Nerd Gear, Wizard Grading, TCG Machines

F2F Tour Merch

Toronto marked the debut of brand new F2F Tour merchandise, and the booth was busy all weekend. From event-exclusive Spotlight Toronto hoodies and tees to hats, water bottles, bags, there was something for everyone looking to rep the tour.

If you missed out this time, keep an eye on future F2F Tour events. We plan to keep bringing exclusive merch to each stop on the tour.

Artist Alley

One of the most popular corners of the weekend was Artist Alley, where attendees got cards signed and met some of the talented artists behind the art they love. The largest Canadian MTG artist group ever assembled was on-site all weekend, and the response from the community spoke for itself.
