Pokemon League Cup Recap: Cosmic Eclipse

The 2020 Pokemon TCG competitive season has been in full swing for several months now. But since the release of Cosmic Eclipse in November the meta has blown wide open with a huge variety of decks earning Championship Points at all levels of play.

This past weekend’s League Cup at Face to Face Games Toronto was no exception. We had four different archetypes reach the final table between all three age divisions.

Juniors

The day’s small but enthusiastic Juniors Division ended with a final matchup between Tristan Tse and Kamil Bidzinski squaring off in a Mewtwo & Mew Tag Team mirror match. Though the two players had extremely similar lists with several Mew3 staples such as Greninja GX, Latios GX and Espeon & Deoxys Tag Team, Tristan cut his selection of GXs to allow space for a play-set of Acro Bike and the consistency that comes with it. Showing that consistency is king, Tristan triumphed over Kamil to take first place in Juniors.

The Juniors Division had 8 players and played three rounds before a cut to top 4.

Seniors

In the Seniors Division we were treated to what was maybe the most interesting finals matchup of the day with Justin Tse playing an ADP variant including a wide range of tech attackers facing off against Ethan Szendry playing Persian GX Box. Justin’s ADP deck had several interesting includes such as Heracross UNM and Girafarig LOT. In the end Justin was able to grab the win giving both Tse siblings the top spots in their respective divisions.

The Seniors Division had 14 players and played four rounds before a cut to Top 4.

Masters

In our Masters Division we saw Allan Xu face off again Chris Venier in a Malamar mirror.

Though this was a mirror matchup the two players hardly had identical decks each staying true to the nature of Malamar decks by bringing a wide variety of tech attackers to help them secure wins throughout the tournament. Ultimately Allan’s attacker lean variant found victory using Ultra Necrozma GX.

The Masters Division had 45 players and played 6 rounds before a cup to the top 8.
