Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in Team Trios to see which squad could navigate all three constructed formats with expertise to come out on top!
Well I think we can call it — Jeff Swaluk, Simon Tubello and Andrew Gordon are the best Team Trios team in Toronto.
These three guys have won three Team Trios Showdowns now. The first time Face to Face Games Toronto hosted a Trios event, these three found each other by happenstance and, well they haven’t looked back since.
On Sunday, Swaluk played U/R [Card]Arclight Phoenix[/Card] in Standard one of the more innovative decks from the new Standard format. Tubello played his signature Jeskai Control deck in Modern and Andrew Gordon played the ever-popular Grixis Control in Legacy. Congratulations to these three on what has been and outstanding run.
The rest of the Top 4 also featured a number of familiar faces. Chris Flink made the elimination rounds in yet another Showdown, Cassandra Phillips cast some [Card]Llanowar Elves[/Card] into Top 8, Nick Roberts was casting [Card]Collected Company[/Card] as expected and Sam Shoffner is still good at Legacy.
I for one think these team events are awesome and it’s even more awesome to see story lines like Swaluk, Tubello and Gordon pop up. Obviously, Magic is about the people around you and how they help make the game great and nothing illustrates that more than some friends going closer while winning a couple tournaments!
With their win on Sunday, Swaluk, Tubello and Gordon cement their spots in the upcoming Ultimate Showdown and the rest of our Top 4 have begun their march up the leader board to qualify. This upcoming weekend’s Sunday Showdown will be a Standard Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier. Make sure to gab all of those Guilds of Ravnica singles you need and come on out!
