Showdown Recap: Modern

0

Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in Modern to see who could take home the top prize!

One of the masters of the FacetoFaceGames.com Open Series has claimed his first Toronto Sunday Showdown title to add to his growing list of accomplishments. Azorius Control aficionado Stephen Kerr took down our Modern Showdown this past Sunday. Kerr also has an Open win and an Open Top 8 to his name with the deck in the last few months.

Joining Kerr in the Top 8 was Boston Schatteman playing his trusty Blue Moon deck, Delan Hamasoor on Humans, Connors Eilerson who seems to Top 8 every Modern Showdown with Ponza, Michael Earnshaw on Izzet Phoenix, Connor Scully making it two copies of Azorius Control in Top 8, Dominic Harvey playing an innovative Jeskai Control deck and David Booker playing Mono-Red Phoenix.

Obviously Toronto’s reputation for being over-saturated with copies of Snapcaster Mage reigned true on Sunday and it’s because of the many additions these blue midrange decks have obtained as of late. Narset, Parter of Veils is really making its mark on the format and it is clear just how powerful this card is when you look at our Top 8.

Your Modern Showdown Top 8.

From Kerr going all in on the new three-mana walker as a card advantage engine to Dominic Harvey literally using her as a combo piece to lock-out your opponents draw step in conjunction with Teferi’s Puzzle Box this card has been making waves.

Modern Horizons is, well, on the horizon and it’s still yet to be seen what that means for the format as a whole. That in mind, the format has already started to slow down with the additions from War of the Spark and Horizons promises even more of that with cards like Force of Negation. Is it time for a midrangey Modern format like we’ve all dreamt about?

Before I leave you for the week, we at Face to Face Toronto want to remind you about our upcoming 10k Mythic Championship Qualifier taking place on June 15.
