The weekend’s lineup gave players several ways to join in: on-demand Commander pods, drafts, and games alongside guest creators. Between rounds, the artist lineup included Zara Alfonso, Eelis Kyttanen, Nino Vecia and Kim Sokol, with vendor booths offering another reason to take a lap around the hall.

At the competitive tables, Saturday and Sunday belonged to the Modern Regional Championship. Kaya Gregg finished on top with Azorius Control, ahead of Will Shayne on Mono-Green Broodscale. Here’s a closer look at the champion and the decks that made the Top 8.

Ottawa’s Modern Field

Mono-Green Broodscale was the most popular deck in Ottawa at 17.3% of the field, followed by Izzet Prowess at 14.9%. Three Broodscale players made the Top 8. None of the Prowess players did, and Kaya Gregg took the title with Azorius Control.

Kaya Gregg Wins with Azorius Control

Gregg’s winning list combines a familiar blue-white control shell with the Scepter-Chant package: one Isochron Scepter, four Orim’s Chant and three Silence. Four copies each of Narset, Parter of Veils and Teferi, Time Raveler anchor the planeswalker suite, alongside a single Jace, the Mind Sculptor.

There are three Day’s Undoing to pair with Narset, four Solitude, and a removal package that includes Wrath of the Skies, Prismatic Ending and Supreme Verdict. The sideboard includes Kaheera, the Orphanguard, four Mystical Dispute and three additional Consign to Memory. It is a list with several ways to constrain an opponent’s options while building its own advantage.

Readers of our August 2 Toronto RCQ recap will recognize Gregg and Scepter-Chant. That qualifier victory earned a seat in Ottawa; this time, the run ended with the Regional Championship trophy.
